Vintage Barong Desk Plate from Bali | Balinese Mythology
Regular priceSale price
Here we have an unusual wood desk plate featuring Barong from Balinese mythology. Nothing subtle about this hand carved sign of elite business acumen. Barong is coming right out at you. The deal is done and I hope the debt isn't too fierce. This little gothic beauty likely came out of the estate of prominent business James Rupp of Minneapolis. He was a pioneer in the world of television. With Barong on your side, who wouldn't be?
Barong is a panther-like creature and character in the Balinese mythology of Bali, Indonesia. He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon queen and mother of all spirit guarders in the mythological traditions of Bali. The battle between Barong and Rangda is featured in the Barong dance to represent the eternal battle between good and evi.
The ornately carved nameplate was likely made in the 50s or 60s. This is only a guess. The unusual piece measures 14" wide, 4 1/2" tall at its tallest point, and about 1 1/2" deep. There is light patina throughout. There is a small scrape exposing wood in the lower left corner. Overall it is very solid. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
I ship FedEx to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO boxes). Free shipping on the unusual gothic desk art.
