Don Ferlen Painting of Surreal Nature Scene | 1960s Watercolor

Here we have a surreal watercolor painting involving hovering birds and their shadows, by listed Louisiana Don Ferlen. Trippy and tones, up, down, left and right. The southern art piece has an ominous tone, and I can't begin to describe what the birds are doing. Throw in the faux black bamboo frame, and it all comes together for one wicked artwork to live with on the wall.

The surreal artwork comes out of an high end art estate in the Twin Cities. Based on the framing, I believe the artwork was created in the 1960s. The artwork is signed "Ferlen" in the bottom right. Here's a quick bio of artist Don Ferlen:

Don Ferlen was born in Minneapolis, MN in 1925. He attended art school at the Walker Art Center and the St. Paul School of Art. He worked for the Bureau of Engraving in Minneapolis while continuing his own painting. After moving to Northfield in 1966, he worked at Carleton College and for the architectural firm of Sovik, Mathre, Madson. Beginning in 1976, he often traveled to New Orleans and exhibited his work on Jackson Square in the French Quarter. From 1986 through 1994, he worked for the David Kjerland Stained Glass Studio in Northfield as Artistic Director. He designed dozens of stained glass windows for such clients as the Dennison (MN) Lutheran Church, Hvistendahl and Moersch Law Offices (Northfield, MN), The St. James Hotel (Red Wing, MN), The Washington School for the Creative Arts (South St. Paul, MN) and Martins-by-the-Lake (Minnetonka Beach, MN). He also produced one-man shows for Northwestern National Bank (Minneapolis, 1964), Lincoln Bauls Gallery (Minneapolis, 1966) and Jano’s Gallery (St. Peter, MN 1972).

The framed artwork measures 16 1/2" frame tall by 9 1/2" wide. The exposed artwork measures 10 3/4" tall by 4 1/4" wide. The faux bamboo frame has wear throughout. The vintage matting is original and shows its age. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
