Here we have a couple of large Comedy & Tragedy wood masks straight out of your unconscious fears. They came from an old abandoned Chicago estate, which is likely worse than your unconscious fears. These beauties are hand carved folk art and completely full of mayhem. I mean even the wood knot looks like an entry wound. And his partner there looks like someone I don't need in my life. Yeesh.
I don't even want to think about what was going on in the wood carver's head when they took on this project. But I will say: the masks are well carved. This is the work of an artisan. He/she could do creepy in spades.
Since the Chicago estate was abandoned for decades. I think the masks could be as early as the 30s or as late as the 60s.
The wood masks measure about 15" tall and 10" wide. The unique carvings do have some nicks and scrapes from years of use and storage. However, they are solid. Both masks have hanging hooks on the reverse of the wood forms. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
