Here we have a large civil war mourning photograph print of a family posing with a small mourning photograph of the soldier around the wife's neck. It's been said a million times, but a picture does say a thousand words. You have the brooch with the soldier wearing the military cap, the woman displaying the wedding ring, and the sorrow and pain in the faces of all involved. It's a powerful scene that rivals any antique photography example out there.
The following link details Civil War mourning customs and the stages of grief in terms of clothing. The article also contains a picture of a woman with a similar dress and mourning photograph around her neck.
The authentic photograph and backing board measures about 13" x 13". The haunting image measures 13" tall and just over 11" wide. The piece definitely has evidence of age. There are nicks, wear and discoloration throughout, especially along the left side of the image. The image of the mourning family still cuts right through all of it. The piece is curling inward. The backing board is experiencing a few cracks along the edges. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
