Antique Silhouette Painting of Hobo and Smoking Pipe | Early 1900s
Here we have a rare and unusual antique silhouette painting of a hobo, complete with a wrinkled hat, smoking pipe, and whiskers everywhere. I've looked high and low and I can't find anything like it. With the few that have a pipe present I've never seen the smoke rising from the pipe. And then you have the mysterious "Final Result" scribed right on the painting. I'll take all of it, every day.
When the artist decided to accentuate the scene, they didn't hold back. And speaking of the artist....on the reverse you have the artist creating artwork from their own signatures, to the point of almost going abstract with it.
The amazing antique folk art comes out of an old estate in western Wisconsin. My guess is the silhouette painting was created in the 1920s. As stated above, the artwork is signed on the reverse. I believe the elaborate cursive signature indicates "A.C. Swenson." I still haven't found out anything about the artist so we're dealing with a mystery artist. The unusual frame was likely hand carved around the same time.
The framed folk art measures 5 1/2" tall, 5" wide and 1" deep. The card stock surface is stained in a few corners (see pics). The unusual frame has a few sections missing. There is a perfect patina throughout the piece. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
I ship FedEx to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO Boxes). Free shipping on the rare antique silhouette painting.
