Antique Russian Crucifixion Painting with a Skull in the Rocks
Here we have a stunning turn of the century Russian painting of the crucifixion with an ominous skull peeking out of the rocky depths. A few of the early depictions of Jesus on the cross will represent Hell below him, and this is one of the best I've ever seen. If a skull is present, it'll just be place at the foot of the cross. This iconographic example actually has the skull peeking out from a gap in the rocks. The power of the entire image with the darkened skies in the background will stay with you and anyone else who takes it in. A million Good Friday services all in one. I'll shut up now and let the artwork speak.
The antique Russian painting comes out of a very high end collection from Las Vegas....seriously. The oil on canvas board painting was likely executed in the very early 1900s. The artwork is not signed so we're dealing with a mystery artist from Russia.
The framed painting measures 21" tall by 15 1/2" wide. There are a few light losses throughout the painting. However, they don't affect the power of the painting. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
