Here we have ann extraordinarily rare, double-sided antique trade sign for the Wausau Studio in Wausau, Wisconsin, dating from the early 20th century. What a piece of history we’re looking at. I’ve looked high and low and old photography studio signs aren’t falling off of trees. These small regional studios were a part of the backbone of America, and a very cool place to hang out.

This powerful sign was designed to hang from a building, drawing the eye with its bold, gilded/gold-leaf lettering against a dark background, and directing patrons to the second-floor entrance ("UP-STAIRS"). Through historical research, we can confirm this sign likely belonged to a historic Photography Studio in Wausau, WI. The palette shape was a deliberate artistic choice used by early professional photographers to signal the "art" of portraiture, appealing to a higher-end clientele. Before modern studio lighting, photographers sought the consistent, pure light from windows or skylights on the top floors of buildings—making "Up-Stairs" a classic location for a turn-of-the-century studio.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece from a local Wisconsin business that has long since closed, ensuring its rarity and authenticity. It came out of a collector of antique photography collectibles. The piece was likely made between 1900 - 1930.

The photography studio sign measures 28" at its widest point and 21” at its tallest point, and about 1" deep. There is patina and surface wear throughout both sides of the sign. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
