Antique Brass Crucifix with Smiling Skull and Crossbones | Early 1900s
Here we have an antique brass crucifix with a smiling skull and crossbones at the feet of the Christ figure. That skull has a smile the size of the Jokier, yet there's nothing funny about this intense relic. The skull even has a frown. The heavy scene mixed with the heavy patina hits a hard, repeating chord.
The brass crucifix comes out of an old estate in Iowa. There were plenty to choose from. Of course, the old (and now unseen) crucifixes with the smiling skull and bones jumped out immediately.
I believe the crucifix is from the early 1900s, but it might be earlier. Because of the way the hook hangs, this might be a large pendant for a necklace. It won't hang correctly on the wall.
The antique crucifix measures just over 1/2" x 2 1/2". There is patina throughout, including oxidation on the right wrist and along the edges of the inlay wood. There is oxidation on the reverse as well. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
I ship FedEx to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO boxes please). Free shipping on the crucifix.
Where this antique piece hangs, there is reverence. It's a sight to behold.
