Here we have a rare 1930s window into a dreamscape of a beauty with blue velvet. Set the stage. The woman is in mid gesture. Both arms lifted to gather her hair. One hip cocked toward a wall of curtain the color of a struck match. The room behind her goes dark and coffee brown. Her eyes drop off to the side, like she just heard a floorboard creak in the next room…

This canvas is the earliest of three we pulled from a single Chicago source. Unsigned to art history but signed clean as day by the artist himself. All three share that same pool of blue velvet drapery. Her two sisters are listed separately in our shop. One reclining across that velvet. One seated, staring straight through you. This is a decade of one Chicago painter's private world, split into three pieces and still intact after almost ninety years.

Blue velvet keeps surfacing in this trio like a signature. You already know the other blue velvet: the film that taught everyone the nicest looking street can hide the strangest room in town. This isn't that. But cut it open and you find the same fabric underneath. Something ordinary on top. A current running below it, one you feel before you can name.

The painting came out of an old Chicago estate. The artist was found but not much is known. The artwork was likely created in the late 1930s or early 1940s. 

The WPA era painting measures 30” x 21 1/2”.  Condition is honest and untouched. Fine age craquelure across the surface. A couple of small stable paint losses near the lower edge that read as history rather than damage. It hangs in what looks like its original simple wood floater frame. Nothing here has been restored, retouched, or dressed up to sell. The frame is modern and will keep it attached to help for protection during shipping.  Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
