Regular price $250.00

Here we have a wild Ex Voto retablo painting showing and describing an event where a child was thrown from a horse because a dog spooked the beast. What you have here is an action shot, airborne and all. Then you add the early folk art Mexican style, and you have an amazing piece from all angles. You can soak in the colors, the folk art execution, and evidence of significant age....everything came into play when I pounced on this little gem.

Here’s the translation of the transcription:

"At the moment of descending the ravine, the horse of Jose Lopez was frightened by a dog and threw Jose about four meters. He suffered injuries to his hips and ribs. As remedies, poultices, and cures were of no use, he turned to the Virgin of Guadalupe, and as a remedy, she granted him relief. The child of 8 years old is giving thanks with the present retablo, having understood that she is the one who gives and takes away."

The antique ex voto painting comes out of the estate of a serious Mexican art collector in Iowa. I was told the painting was created sometime in the early 1900s. .

The antique Ex Voto measures 8" tall by 12" wide. There is evidence of age throughout the painting (see pics), specifically the the surface rust on the front and reverse. The unframed piece has rough edges. None of it takes away from the power of the piece. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.

I ship FedEx shipping to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO Boxes). Free shipping on the amazing antique Mexican art.
