Here we have a stunning WPA Era landscape painting on canvas. The rare Depression Era artwork is huge, 43" x 29" to be exact, and there's something that hits you from every square inch. From the ominous green sky to the skeleton trees to the innocent houses, the style is about as "WPA" as you can get. The flurry of thick paint colors make it a sight to behold. It will be the center of attention whether you like it or not. Expand the pics to fill your screen. It still will not do it justice. What a great piece of American art history.
The WPA artwork is not signed, so the artist remains a mystery. It's easy to think of Dewey Albinson when soaking it in. There is a signature in pencil on the reverse frame, "Dorothy Douglas." The previous owner didn't put much stock into the idea that this was the artist. My guess is she may have been a previous owner of the piece. Not sure though.
The framed painting measures 43" wide, 29" tall, and 1 1/2" deep. The painting weighs about 8 pounds. There is a pinpoint loss in the top right portion of the painting (see pic). There are also a couple spots top center that I can't explain (see pic). I'm not sure if it's a natural phenomenon with the paint, or something else. The WPA style frame has great patina as well.
