WPA Era Painting of Black Panther in Tropical Scene | 1950s

Here we have a WPA era oil on canvas painting of a black panther getting low and preparing to pounce. I have a hankering for the folk art smothered in WPA style hot sauce, and this one delivers in spades. First, I'm confident the panther ate a bushel of "upper" plants because by the look of those eyes, he's straight up jacked. I mean Jacked. Maybe he's preparing for his new big rig gig. Anyways, he/she has some serious flexibility given the killer movement of the body, courtesy of our mystery artist, Vaughn Lee. The colors pop and the folk art style is cooking. This is a dangerous piece of underground art.

Given the age of the canvas and craquelure of the paint, I'm assuming this piece was created in the 1940s, maybe 50s. I did some initial research and couldn't find any info for Mr. Vaughn Lee. The unusual painting came out of an estate in the prominent Stillwater area of Minnesota.

The unframed WPA era painting measures 24" wide x 18" tall. There is craquelure throughout the paint (see pic). It's one of the reasons I couldn't turn away from it. Love what it adds to it. There are also a couple small losses in the main frame, and more losses along the edges. The canvas is slightly loose but I enjoy it the way it is. Also, the frame lines are reflected in the canvas in certain light. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
