Here we have a stunning WPA era oil paintings of a nude African American woman by Chicago artist Lillian Jean Nosko. I admit this one caught my eye immediately and never let go. It's a beauty of a scene all around, from the lounging subject to the green blanket she's laying on. Then you throw on the indelible WPA style. Mercy! She overpowers a room no matter the size, height, depth, capacity, etc. She pops with a capital "P."
Lillian Jean Nosko exhibited two pieces for the 54th annual exhibition by Artists of Chicago and Vicinity by the Art Institute Chicago from July 1 through July 30, 1950. Here is the program for the show.

The rare nude painting comes out of an old Twin Cities estate containing several of her paintings from the period. I was lucky enough to acquire this beauty. Based on my inspection, the piece is not signed.
The unframed oil on canvas painting measures 24" tall by 36" wide. There is slight wear along the edges of the canvas but nothing that takes away from the power of the nude painting. There's a small loss above the woman but it fit's right into the white paint around it (see pic). The nails stretching the canvas definitely help age the piece. Some of the canvas wrapped around the stretching is fraying on the side. Nothing an appropriate frame can't handle. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
