Here we have a rare Artist Proof color woodblock print on woven paper by the artist Walter Henry Williams. The title is "Marguerites." The artwork is signed and dated 1961 in the lower right corner. With the execution of the bright colors it is not surprising that this piece met the standards of the artist. It's a stunner.
This piece came from an estate of a Minneapolis art collector.
Here is some more information about this important artist:
"African-American artist Walter Williams was born in Brooklyn, New York, August 11, 1920. He studied art at the Brooklyn Museum Art School under Ben Shahn, Reuben Tam and Gregorio Prestopino. He also spent a summer studying art at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.
About six or seven years after completing his art studies, sometime in the early 1960s, Williams moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. He returned briefly to the United States, where he completed a body of work informed by the experiences of being an African American living in the South. It was while he was in Copenhagen, however, that he created a series of colorful woodcuts of black children playing in fields of flowers. Walter Williams died in Copenhagen in June 1998."
The framed print measures 18" x 38" and the visible woodblock measures sight H 12" x W 32". The framing and matting is vintage. The artwork has not been examined out of it frame. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
