Vintage Surreal Painting from 1960s | Outsider Art
Here we have a vintage surrealist painting of a hazy marsh scene straight from an acid trip. A phenomenal acid trip, mind you. The more you dig into it, the crazier it gets. I had no idea the Bayou landscape had so many eyeballs lost in the haze. Shifty eyes, no less. And those little critters may have taken out Waldo there in the middle. Dude's not looking so good. Or maybe he is...gotta love surrealism.
The piece haunts you long after viewing. Good luck trying to shake it.
The rare unusual artwork is signed on the reverse "Christopher Charles." I think it's safe to say Mr. Charles is an outsider artist who had lucid dreams about the Bayou. The vintage frame is stamped "Grumbacher, New York," likely dating it to the 1950s or 60s.
I don't know much about the artist. The painting comes from an estate of an art collector in the Twin Cities. He owned it for decades and always wanted to get it framed. He never got around to framing it and now the painting is back out in the wild. Fresh to the market, as they say.
I have another painting by the same artist from the same estate listed in the shop. It has a Hammerhead figure! Yep, It's just as wild.
The unframed vintage painting measures 26" tall and 24" wide. The painting has scuffs throughout and along the edges, especially the bottom. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
I ship FedEx to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO Boxes please). Free shipping on the mind blowing painting.
Born on a Bayou takes on an entire different meaning. So good, and so hazy.
