Chinese Wood Bust of Old Man | Turn of the Century
Here we have an antique Chinese wood carving of an elderly man with a look that demands a triple-take. Nothing creepy about this one...(crickets). I could tell you not to look at his eyeballs, but it's a futile endeavor. Someone put a lot of work into this stellar gent. Check out all the wrinkles, not only in the face but in the robe he's wearing. And top it off with all the little hair slices throughout his skull. This dude is ready to haunt, 24/7.
The rare wood carving came out of a Chinese collection full of opium relics and underground art. This doozy fit right in. The wood is very dense and has some weight to it. Not sure the type of wood but it's super solid.
We have a mystery artist on our hands. I can't find a signature or marking anywhere. I believe the piece is from the late 1800s or early 1900s.
The Chinese carving is 11" tall, 7 1/2" wide, and about 4" deep at the head. The bThere is patina everywhere, including wear, scrapes and losses to the glaze (see pics). Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
I ship FedEx to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO boxes). Free shipping on the amazing carving.
Peer into his eyes at your own peril. Throw some half light on this piece and you'll have a full-on party.
