Antique Crucifixion Painting with Skull and Snake | Folk Art

Here we have an antique folk painting of the crucifixion scene complete with Mary Magdalene, a skull, and a snake going for the apple. This one stopped me in my tracks for a laundry list of reasons, which include the following:

1. The skull. Every time.
2. The snake...going for the apple. Never seen the like.
3. The unusual form of Mary Magdalene. So...so good.
4. The baby blue sky. That's a first for a crucifixion scene, at least for this fella.
5. The Impressionist style of the blue sky.

And the list goes on and on. There's just something about it, which is the glory of old folk art. Imagine the home it hung in, and the people drawn to it or disturbed by it. Either way, it worked then and it definitely works now.

The antique folk art painting came out of rural Iowa, likely produced in the early 1900s. The painting is signed "N. Kanellio." I still haven't tracked down a full name, so we're dealing with a mystery artist.

The framed skull and snake artwork measures 25" tall and 19 1/2" wide. The exposed artwork measures 21 1/2" x 16 3/4". The painting has patina from age throughout, yet it is solid, and she pops like the 4th of July. The antique frame is solid as well. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.

I ship FedEx to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO Boxes). Free shipping on the unique folk art painting.

Nothing but blue skies ahead.
