Rare Antique Tin Retablo of Cross of Souls | Las Animas Solas

Here we have a stunning Spanish Colonial tin retablo painting representing "La Cruz de Animas," the Cross of Souls. When it comes to execution, substance, breadth, and detail, this is simply one of the best paintings I've ever owned. And based on the research, there are only a few examples that ever surface. And yet, I've never seen the skull at the base of the cross.

Here is more information about the "La Cruz de Animas" theme:

The composition depicts Christ on the Cross, flanked by the sun and moon and surmounted by the Eternal Father in the celestial realm above. At the bottom are 12 animas solas (lonesome departed ancestral souls) pleading for salvation while awaiting judgement in the flames of purgatory. These souls surround a small vignette of Adam and Eve beneath the Tree of Life. Above is La Mater Dolorosa to the left of the Cross and St. Michael holding a sword and scales of justice to the right emphasizing the themes of judgement and redemption. All is set against a beautiful starry blue sky. This form was particular to the Otomi culture from around the state of Queretaro, and acted as a reminder to pray for the safekeeping of the souls of departed ancestors as well as oneself.

The antique retablo painting comes out of a Twin Cities estate of a serious Mexican art collector. I was told the painting was created in the late 1800s. I think it's possible it was created in the early 1900s but I'm not sure.

The antique Spanish Colonial retabro measures 14" tall by 10" wide. The colors are extremely vibrant. There is evidence of age throughout the painting (see pics), specifically the slight streaks of rust(?) on the front and reverse. None of it takes away from the power of the piece. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.

I ship FedEx shipping to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO Boxes). Free shipping on the amazing antique Mexican art.

One of the best I've ever owned. Period.
