Antique Photograph of Cuban Bone Yard from late 1800s

Here we have a antique photograph of a grim scene from the Spanish American War. No way to get around the fact that this is one morbid photograph from the late 1800s. Imagine being a soldier and walking up on this situation.

There are two sections of handwriting on the reverse. Here they are:

First section: "This is a history of Spain's administration in Cuba. [illegible words] near Havana. [illegible words] dying from starvation.

Second section: "Old Spanish Fort or Prison. Heaps of bones late 1890's. Cuban atrocities. Spanish American war era."

On a related note: In the later 19th century, the price of a grave at the cemetery was $10 for five years. If the family of the deceased didn't pay for the remains to stay buried, the remains would be dug up and the bones thrown on the pile in the boneyard. This practice was common in Cuba but also across Europe.

The rare military photograph measures 12" wide and 10" tall. The actual image measures 8" wide and 5" tall. The backing definitely shows its age. There is a loss in the bottom right corner (see pics). The backing is curling slightly upward. There are scuffs and discolorations throughout the front and back.
