Here we have a stunning watercolor and ink painting of a Civil War battle by renowned war artist Julian Scott. The detail of this 19th century artwork is a sight to behold. The amount of soldiers crammed into this space amongst the bullets and explosions is intense. You need plenty of time to take everything in. And then you have the depth and layers.
The Civil War painting may depict the Battle at Lee's Mills in Virginia, which Scott witnessed as a drummer (see bio below). "Richmond" is written in the bottom right corner (see pic). The painting is signed "julian Scott" and dated 1865 on one of the boxes in the supply tent (see pic). The rare Civil War painting comes out to a Twin Cities art gallery owner's private collection. The execution looks to be in watercolor and ink on
Here is some info about Julian Scott courtesy of the artist's Wikipedia page.
Scott received his early education at the Lamoille Academy, known today as Johnson State College where the main gallery is named in his memory. Scott continued his studies, graduating from the National Academy of Design in New York and subsequently studied under Emmanuel Leutze until 1868. During the Civil War, Scott enlisted in the 3rd Vermont Infantry on June 1, 1861, at the age of 15 as a fifer and, in February 1865, received the Medal of Honor for rescuing wounded soldiers while under enemy fire during the Battle at Lee's Mills, Virginia.
When the war was over, he traveled to Paris and Stuttgart to continue his education. Scott's 1872 masterwork, the Battle of Cedar Creek, is located at the Vermont State House. The painting illustrates the contributions of his home state of Vermont in the American Civil War and is significant for its absence of glorification of war and instead shows the suffering and human sacrifice associated with war. Scott traveled west as part of a census party, painting Native Americans in New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma. Many of his works from this expedition now hang in the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Art.
The framed painting measures 35" wide, 20" tall, and 1" deep. There is staining of the board, especially along the left side. There are a few discoloration circular spots along the middle bottom. There are a few puncture spots above the exploding cannon. I'm hoping this beauty has a possible restoration in its future. It is so worth it. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
