Here we have a stunning Barbizon style oil painting by M.E. Farr, a South Dakota regionalist artist. The haunting painting is signed in the lower right.
And then there's the scene...I mean, come on. The remnants of the old stone structure, the creepy Blair Witch type beams in the gothic window, the dying sun hiding behind the stone, the tiny dark figures at the foot of the lake, the overbearing and foreboding tree, the glistening river coming at you, and the haunting light and shadows across everything. Unbelievable. How this came out of an artist in South Dakota is a mystery to me.
Farr was a faculty member (art instructor) at Pierre University (South Dakota) between 1896 - 1897. I'm still trying to find out more about the artist. The painting was acquired at a South Dakota auction.
The original painting measures 20" x 20". The painting shows it's age in numerous ways. It has two puncture holes. There are two areas of the main painting with paint loss. There is also paint loss along the edges. I believe the painting used to be framed in an oval frame, based on the wear lines. Also, scratches and grime throughout, It needs repairs and cleaning, or it doesn't need anything. It depends on your preference.
