Here we have a powerful and extremely rare look at life for an African American community in Arkansas in the late 1800s. What an incredible image. This photo offers a glimpse into education in Arkansas following the Reconstruction era (post-Civil War). The rural scene of a black school in 1888 weighs heavy when you think of all the threats around them. I've searched high and low and can't find a photography like this from Arkansas in this time period.

This image was likely taken using a large format camera and a relatively slow photographic process. The photographer would have needed a tripod and the children would have had to remain still for several seconds.

On the reverse there is handwriting in graphite.
"Leona Burrels, about 1888, Hot Springs, Ark"

The antique photograph comes out of a Michigan estate containing a large collection of rare and unusual photography from the late 1800s. This example is no exception.

The antique photo and backing measure 6" tall by 9" wide. The piece has plenty of surface patina from age. There is discolorations in certain areas, especially around the edges. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.

I ship FedEx to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO boxes). Free shipping on the rare antique photograph.

What a stunning historical image. This is one rare and important artifact.
