Here we have a grand antique oil painting of the crucifixion scene in the black of night, with an ominous skull at the foot of the cross. It's always a serious scene, but the collective of this one heightens the color tone of the weight of the world. And it's not just the skull...compare the size of the skull with the size of the heads of the other players in the scene. The artist wanted to remind the viewer that Hell was just below. It hits you. You don't see skulls in crucifixion paintings nowadays. This goes way back in the day.
The gothic religious painting comes out of an old estate in the Twin Cities. I can't find a signature anywhere, so we have a mystery artist on our hands. The style of the painting is totally 19th century. However,It's in pretty good shape, and my gut tells me it's in the 20th century, likely the early 1900s. My hunch is it's had some restoration....I'm just not sure what.
The framed antique painting measures 35 1/2" tall by 30" wide. The ornate frame is full of wear and cool patina. There are a few small pinhole loses and a few scrapes across the canvas. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
