Here we have a wicked studio sketch from the early 1900s by Hollywood artist, Tino Costa (1892-1947). The chaos of this artwork is the last steps to the mountain top. The deep colors of the main scene will swim in your brain and make you feel warm. The figures are loose and expressive with an emphasis on form. The figures might be studies for larger compositions or portraits but this is the perfect end product in my opinion. The color schemes!
Here's a bit more about the artist:
Tino Costa (1892-1947) was an Italian-American artist known for his vibrant portraits and figure studies. Born in Poti, Georgia (then part of the Russian Empire), he spent his youth in France. During World War I, he served in the French army.
In 1929, Costa immigrated to the United States. He quickly gained recognition for his artistic talent, even painting portraits of prominent figures like President Herbert Hoover and the Prince of Wales. In 1935, he moved to California, where he continued his successful career. One of his notable works from this period is a portrait of California Governor Merriam, which was displayed in the State Capitol building.
Costa's style was influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, evident in his expressive brushwork and bold use of color. He often depicted figures and scenes from everyday life, capturing a sense of movement and emotion in his works.
Though he died in Los Angeles in 1947, his paintings continue to be appreciated for their artistic merit and historical significance. They can be found in private collections and occasionally appear in art auctions.
The artwork comes out of a collector's estate focusing on Tino Costa's artwork. The piece was likely created in the 1940s, possibly before. The artwork is not signed.
The full sketch measures 22" x 17". There are some folds and small tears along the edges. There is also surface patina throughout the artwork. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
