Here we have a unique opportunity to acquire a complete academic archive of original artwork by Mary Erickson, a Minnesota-based artist from the 1970s. Whether you’re looking for a collective of a time and place or some wicked wall art to explode a room. This rare collection offers an unparalleled look into the Op Art movement, showcasing a student's journey through a rigorous design curriculum. It is unreal to soak in these optical patterns and colors and read all the theories on the reverse.

The collection consists of a total of 14 pieces, comprising two large, signed and numbered prints and twelve smaller, original studies. Each piece is meticulously documented with an accompanying typed or handwritten note on the reverse, detailing the specific design "problem" or objective assigned in a "Two-Dimensional Design" class from the Fall of 1976 and Spring of 1977.

Here is the breakdown of the archive.

Large, Limited-Edition Prints (3):

"Color Gradient": A signed and numbered print (e.g., 5/16) from 1976. This piece demonstrates a masterly application of color theory, with a seamless gradient from warm yellows to cool greens. Its academic note details the objective to "demonstrate the illusion that warm colors advance and cool colors recede."

"Geometric Grid Study": A black, white, and gray piece from 1977. This work is a methodical study of shape gradation, contrast, and visual rhythm within a strict grid, and its accompanying notes describe a step-by-step change within a limited framework.

"Fractal Reticulation": A dynamic black, white, and gray print from 1977. This work, accompanied by its detailed notes, is a powerful study in "reticulation," "asymmetrical balance," and "rhythm through radiation." The interlocking geometric shapes create a mesmerizing illusion of depth and movement.

Smaller Academic Studies (12):

Color Theory: A series of studies exploring fundamental design principles, including color bridging, hue relationships, and the application of theories from Munsell and others.

Pop Art Influence: A fascinating study featuring a "Brillo" box, demonstrating an exploration of commercial imagery and color proportion, a key theme of the Pop Art movement.

Woven & Striped Patterns: Numerous works showcasing the principles of contrast, repetition, and visual rhythm through the use of geometric and linear patterns.

The most valuable component of this collection is the accompanying documentation. Each artwork's reverse-side notes serve as an "artist's statement," providing a clear-cut explanation of its purpose. These notes cite specific design theories and objectives, such as "shape gradation," "visual impact," and "color proportion in an advertising," offering a unique and invaluable educational resource for artists, students, collectors, and historians of modern design.

The works are original pieces from the 1970s and are in a condition consistent with age, as seen in the photographs. The prints and studies are mounted on artist's board, and the documentation is well-preserved. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.

This collection is being sold as a complete, intact archive to preserve its historical and educational integrity.
