Here we have a large, bombastic expressionist artwork straight out of the late 1940s, possibly originating in Chicago. The larger-than-life scene stretches across a huge Masonite artist board, measuring just under 50” x 39”. And what a scene, and what a crew of characters. Serious Beat Generation vibes. This artwork comes from the vision of a mad genius, possibly even someone who took in the urban underbelly or carnival atmosphere of New Orleans. I speak from experience since I have this hanging in my living room. The MCM bohemian art is an explosion of colors and serious vibes. Unreal piece.
This unique 1940s artwork came out of a private collection in the Chicago area, where a thriving art scene flourished in the mid-20th century. The piece embodies the expressive and raw style characteristic of American urban art from this era. Although the artist remains a mystery, their talent and vision are undeniable, making this a window into a past creative world. The large vintage artwork is unsigned but it is dated in a very strange way, “194A" in the bottom right corner.
The Mid Century Modern expressionist painting measures 49 1/2" tall by 38 1/2". There is a light patina across the mixed media surface of the artist board. There are a few small discoloration spots near the funky date. The frame isn’t very solid and I’d advise looking at another option. One corner is separating a bit.
