Her head tips into a matching pillow. One leg folds up. The other stretches long toward the viewer, feet nearly kicking out of the frame. She isn't posing so much as caught in a totally relaxed state. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat blue velvet is not incidental drapery. It shows up again in both of her sister paintings, listed separately in our shop, like Schultz kept the same fabric in his studio for a decade and built entire compositions around it. One is a standing nude against a yellow curtain. The other is a seated figure who looks straight at you and does not blink. Together they read less like three separate paintings and more like three chapters of one private obsession.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut back to this one! You already know blue velvet as a color and a mood before you know it as a fabric. The 1986 film gave it a second meaning: the prettiest surface in town hiding the ugliest secret underneath it, a scrap of found fabric turning into a doorway you cannot un-open. This painting predates that film by fifty years. It still speaks the same language. Same shade. Same sense that comfort and danger are sharing one piece of cloth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe painting came out of an old Chicago estate. The artist, Dick Schultz, was found but not much is known. Right now all I know about Schultz is he produce a stunning trio of nude paintings, and loved blue velvet.  artwork was created in 1935, the earliest confirmed date in this trio of Chicago figure paintings acquired together from a single source.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe WPA era painting measures 33 1\/2” x 23 1\/2”.  Stable craquelure consistent with a ninety year old oil on canvas. Light surface grime that has not been cleaned off.
