Early Oaxacan Wood Hunting Mask with Animal Figure | 1800s

Here we have a haunting Oaxacan wood hunting mask with a carved animal (fox?). This rare piece is a sight to behold, and I wish it could talk. Many hunting tales to tell, with most resulting in the hunted animal dying of fright. Word to the wise....don't mess with the person walking in the woods with this mask on. It's just common sense. Anyways, this old Mexican folk art piece has an ominous presence. The pictures don't do it justice. And justice wasn't on the mind of the chap who carved this beauty.

I believe the mask originates from the same vein of folk art as the masks found in the Paul Perez Collection at the University of Texas. Here is the link:

The rare Mexican folk art comes out of a collection in rural South Dakota. The tag attached to the piece read "Old Zapotec Hunting Mask". Many other Mexican pieces made up the collection, including the smiling ceramic figure offered in my shop.

One more thing. Check out the trailer for "Hold the Dark" on Netflix.
You'll know why I mention it. The movie is wild one....and it's not Rated G.

The rare Indian mask measures 8 3/4" tall, 6 1/2" wide, and about 4" deep. The patina throughout reflects its age. The wood is solid, yet on the lighter side. I suppose, ya know, its a mask and all. There is an old string attached for throwing it on. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.

I ship FedEx to street addresses in the continental USA only (no PO boxes). Free shipping on the amazing Mexican mask.

Dog will hunt! This is stunner that will come alive with the flicker of the half light in your living space. Comforting thought, I know.
