Here we have a roaring and highly unique piece of early 20th-century folk art embroidery, likely dating from the 1910s to the 1930s. If you want to declare your joint as the ultimate party spot, this folk art is the way to do it. A genuine piece of Americana, this textile served as a hearty and spirited welcome sign, rich with symbolism of luck, fellowship, celebration, a plenty of good feelings. The hand-stitched textile embodies the themes of "good times" and hospitality. The bold, simple stitching style, reminiscent of Sailor's Souvenir Art or Tramp Art, suggests it may have been created by a soldier, sailor, or perhaps an inmate as a pastime—a way to send a message of home and friendship.
The motifs include gambling, dice, card, poker, smoking and drinking. It covers a good portion of the vices. The bold, embroidered phrase "To You Beloved Friends A Hearty Welcome" makes this an ideal piece for a place unique enough to have this beauty welcome your crew. Check out the striking collection of playing cards (Queen of Spades, 7 of Hearts), a domino, and a die symbolize old time gambling and kicking back with your crew. The horseshoe/boot and the overall "Good Luck" sentiment tie the whole composition together.
The textile comes out of an old estate in the Twin Cities. As stated above, the embroidery was likely created between 1910 and 1930.
The framed antique tramp measures 20 1/2” tall by 17 1/2” wide. The old folk art is in decent condition for its age, still showcasing vibrant colors against the aged light gold ground fabric. The is general wear across the entire piece. The textile is wrapped around the backing board but the looseness is producing waves. The piece is sold AS IS. Please see all pics as they are part of the description.
